Syrian Armenians and the Turkish Factor: Book Launch in Yerevan

A book detailing the plight of Armenians in Syria during that country’s civil war took place today at the Armenian National Academy of Sciences in Yerevan.

The book, Syrian-Armenians and the Turkish Factor: Kessab, Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor is the work of Arsen Hakobyan, a senior researcher at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences, and Marcello Mollica, an associate professor at the University of Messina in Italy.

"The book is about crisis, war. When we should have finished the book, the Syrian war was going on, and in July 2020, the Armenian-Azerbaijani border clashes started. The book concludes with the description of those clashes,” said Arsen Hakobyan.

"The Turkish factor in the Karabakh issue today is the same as in Syria. It plays a big role, which unfortunately is not seen by the international powers. The world should take the Turkish factor more seriously. The same models are used. As foreign minorities were used in the past, Turkmen are still involved in conflicts, ” said Leon Abrahamyan, Head of the Department of Modern Ethnography at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.
