Yerevan Bus Drivers Strike for Better Pay, Work Conditions

Public bus drivers in Yerevan staged a work stoppage today that has crippled some routes in the Armenian capital.

The drivers, according to Yerevan Mayoral Spokesperson Hakob Karapetyan, are demanding better working conditions and a wage increase.

Karapetyan, in a Facebook post, said the drivers now receive 260,000 drams ($525) for working two weeks. The official said that some drivers want to return to the old pay system where they get a share of the fares collected.

Karapetyan said the work stoppage in unacceptable and that the municipality will push ahead with its public transportation reforms.

He said the old pay system was rife with corruption risks.
