Work Begins to Reopen Railway Linking Armenia, Azerbaijan, Says Pashinyan

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan today announced that work has begun to reopen the railway linking Armenia and Azerbaijan via Nakhijevan.

The route begins in the Armenian village of Yeraskh, enters Nakhijevan and follows the Arax River, and then traverses the southern border of Syunik before entering Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan, at today’s government cabinet session, said that Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk and General Director of Russian Railways Oleg Belozyorov arrived in Armenia to discuss the matter.

“We have reached agreements on this and are close to recording the first practical results of the trilateral working group on the opening of transportation links in the region,” Pashinyan said.

He said discussions are underway on technical, design and funding issues.
