Armenian Foreign Ministry Says Peace Treaty with Azerbaijan a "Priority"
Armenian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Vahan Hunanyan today said that signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan is one of the priorities of Armenian government.
Hunanyan was responding to an ArmenPress request that he comment on Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov’s statement that Baku has invited Armenia to sign a peace treaty several times.
“The government of Armenia has adopted a strategy of opening an era of peaceful development for the region, thus definitely expresses willingness to undertake steps in that direction,” Hunanyan said.
Hunanyan, when asked to comment on a recent remark by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu regarding the so-called Zangezur corridor, said the use of such terminology is “incomprehensible”.
“On the other hand, the opening of regional communications is also one of the priorities of our government, and concrete steps are being undertaken in this direction, including within the framework of the Armenian Crossroads project,” Hunanyan said.
Çavuşoğlu, at a March 5 news conference after his meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov in Baku, said that Ankara supports the signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Çavuşoğlu said that his government is consulting with Azerbaijan when it comes to Armenia-Turkey normalization talks.
“And that coordination must continue. Implementation of the Zangezur corridor is also important,” Çavuşoğlu said.
The Armenian Crossroads project Hunanyan cites refers to the Armenian government’s expanded highway program to include roadways linking Armenia to Turkey and Azerbaijan.
