Journalism NGOs, Justice Ministry Sign Agreement to Improve Armenia's Media Sector

The Armenian Ministry of Justice, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth and Sports, and ten journalism NGOs today agreed to work together to draft a development strategy for the media in the country.

The agreement signed today also calls for the drafting of legislation to regulate the sector.

The ten NGOs are the Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression, Yerevan Press Club, Media Initiatives Center. Asparez Journalists' Club, Freedom of Information Center, Educational Center for Equal Rights, Institute of Multilateral Information-Armenia, Public Journalism Club, Journalists for the Future, Journalists for Human Rights, and the Goris Press Club.

Media Initiatives Center Head Nuneh Sargsyan stressed the need for such cooperation and called for a working group with international experts.

"Today we are facing the problem of changing the media law, defining who is a journalist, who is a media outlet.  We do not have answers to many questions. The small changes made so far haven’t solved many issues," Sarsgyan said.

The overall aim of today’s agreement is to improve the dissemination of information in the country, encourage quality journalism, and reduce misinformation and hate speech.
