Armenia, Azerbaijan Agree on Syunik Roadway, Says Izvestia

The Russian Izvestia news outlet reports that Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to establish a roadway linking Nakhijevan with the rest of Azerbaijan via Armenia’s southern Syunik Province.

Izvestia reports that a “high-ranking informed source” leaked news of the agreement, reached with Russian support, and that a six kilometer on the border of the Nakhichevan region and Armenia remains to be worked out.

The route will run along the Araks River from the Armenian side. In the rest of the section, according to the Izvestia source, old Soviet roads will be used, which prior to 1992 connected Nakhichevan with the Zangelan region of Azerbaijan through Armenian territory.

Yesterday, Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan stated that the working group of Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian deputy prime ministers on unblocking regional transport links was able to bring the positions of Yerevan and Baku closer on many issues, including border customs control.
