EcoLur, an environmental NGO in Armenia, reports that continued mapping of environmental pollution in the areas of Stepanavan and Tumanyan, towns in the country’s northern Lori province, has revealed the existence of high levels of heavy metals in children under the age of eighteen.
Studies in the area, known for its mining operations, have been conducted jointly by EcoLur, the Center for Community Mobilization and Support NGO (CCMS), and the Czech Arnika NGO.
A comprehensive study covering a four-year period monitored the presence of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. Analyzes were carried out on samples taken from soil, dust, food, as well as urine and hair samples taken directly from area residents.
EcoLur, in a statement issued today, says it’s prepared a comprehensive package of recommendations for improving the situation has been handed to community representatives in the area.
