Camera Catches Glimpse of Rare Caucasian Leopard in Armenia
A glimpse of the endangered Caucasian Leopard (Panthera pardus ciscaucasica) was recorded by a camera trap in Armenia’s Khosrov Forest.
Monitoring of the leopard is carried out by Armenia’s Ministry of the Environment and the World Wildlife Fund.
The Caucasian Leopard, also called the Persian Leopard, is one of the biggest of the eight recognized subspecies of leopard.
The Caucasian Leopard subspecies is found across several different countries including Iran, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Georgia. They live mainly in remote, mountainous habitats which can range from dry and arid areas to forested regions and even extend up into snowy mountain ranges.
There are thought to be fewer than 1,000 Caucasian Leopards left in the wild.
