Pashinyan, Putin Talk; Baku Demands Closure of Lachin Corridor

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, by telephone today, discussed implementing the trilateral agreements reached by the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan following the 2020 war in Artsakh, this according to a Kremlin statement.

Pashinyan’s office released a similar statement on the telephone call.

The telephone call came after Azerbaijan allegedly demanded the closure of the Lachin Corridor, the sole land route connecting Armenia and Karabakh.

Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan today convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Service to discuss the matter. Harutyunyan said Baku's demand to close the corridor was conveyed via the Russian peacekeeping contingent.

The 2020 Karabak war ceasefire agreement calls for the construction of a new road linking Armenia and Karabakh that will bypass the town of Lachin by 2024.

Yesterday, the Artsakh government reported its defense units repulsed Azerbaijani military attempts to cross the Line of Contact
