Ousted Yerevan Mayor Announces Return to Acting

Hayk Marutyan, ousted as Yerevan mayor in a December 2021 no-confidence vote by the Yerevan Municipal Council, says he’s returning to acting in addition to taking a more active role in public affairs.

Prior to serving as Yerevan mayor (October 2018-December 2021), Marutyan worked as a comedian, screenwriter and producer.

He’s announced a one-man show (The Mayor) for later this month in Yerevan.

Marutyan actively supported Nikol Pashinyan during the October 2018 “velvet revolution” and joined Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party.

The ruling My Step (Im Kayl) faction of the Yerevan Municipal Council introduced the no-confidence measure, arguing that Marutyan had severed his ties with the Civil Contract party and had failed to implement the party’s campaign obligations.
