Pelosi Hints at Possible U.S. Defense Assistance to Armenia

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, now visiting Armenia, said the U.S. condemns Azerbaijan’s attack on Armenia last week.

"On behalf of the U.S. Congress, we strongly condemn the deadly attacks by Azerbaijan on the territory of Armenia," Pelosi said at a joint press conference following her meeting with Armenia National Speaker Alen Simonyan.

Hinting at possible defense assistance to Armenia, Pelosi said the U.S. is ready to help Armenia if Pashinyan’s government seeks it.

"Here, we will listen to the demands in the sphere of defense cooperation. Here, we will also listen to Armenia's expectations and questions to understand what we can do. Armenia's democracy, territorial integrity and sovereignty are considered important issues for us, and we want to express our active support. Of course, the decision is for Armenia to make. We can talk about our readiness here," Pelosi said, remaining vague on what type of defense cooperation she had in mind.

Pelosi repeatedly mentioned that U.S. President Joe Biden officially recognized the Armenian Genocide.

Regarding the Karabakh conflict, Pelosi emphasized that the U.S., as co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, has repeatedly stated that the conflict cannot have a military solution.

"We continue to follow the events and we want to strive for a negotiated, peaceful and lasting solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Pelosi said.

U.S. Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, who is accompanying Pelosi, said the U.S. will continue to help Armenia and that they are against any change of international borders.

Eshoo said the U.S. Congress has drafted a resolution condemning Azerbaijan's aggression.

Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce Frank Pallone said the U.S. is “deeply concerned” about Armenia’s security that Pelosi’s delegation is trying to understand what the U.S. can do to assist Armenia given that the country is a member of the Russian-led CSTO.

Pelosi’s delegation arrived in Armenia yesterday.
