Pashinyan Says Twenty Armenian Soldiers Captured in Border Clashes

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, at today’s Security Council session in Yerevan, said that twenty Armenian soldiers were captured in fighting last week along the country’s border with Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan said there is evidence that Azerbaijani troops tortured some of the captured Armenian soldiers and mutilated the bodies of those killed.

He said that 204 Armenian soldiers have been confirmed killed or missing during last week’s fighting. Three civilians were killed.

He reported that Azerbaijani forces targeted thirty-six settlements in Armenia resulting in 192 homes and two schools either being damaged or destroyed.

The Security Council adopted a statement that Armenia will protect its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity by all available means and that Azerbaijani troops must withdraw from the occupied territories of Armenia.

The statement declares: "Having adopted an agenda of establishing peace and opening regional communications, the Republic of Armenia considers unacceptable the policy of threat and coercion conducted by Azerbaijan."
