U.S. Senate Lifts Restrictions on F-16 Sale to Turkey
The U.S. Senate, on Tuesday, removed two provisions restricting the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey in its version of the U.S. National Defense Authority Act (NDAA) for 2023, this according to Turkish press reports.
The amendments, introduced by Senators Bob Menendez and Chris van Hollen, were seen as restricting the sale of the jets to Turkey.
The fiscal 2023 NDAA must pass the Senate and House of Representatives before it can be sent to the White House for President Joe Biden to sign into law.
In July, the U.S. House of representatives backed legislation barring the sale of fighters to Turkey unless the Biden administration certifies that doing so is essential to U.S. national security.
The other provision said the fighters could not be used for unauthorized flights over Greece.
Turkey wants to buy forty F-16 fighters and eighty modernization kits for its existing warplanes from the U.S.
