EU Border Monitoring Mission to Report on Armenian, Azerbaijani Military Positions

The EU Delegation in Armenia today clarified some details regarding the recent dispatch of an EU civilian border monitoring mission to Armenia

They include the following points:

  • The main objective is to help build confidence between the two countries by observing their commitment to the ceasefire.
  • The EU’s mission in Armenia will carry out the following key tasks. 1) to support the building of trust between Armenia and Azerbaijan, observing the commitment of both sides to the maintenance of the ceasefire. 2) The EU group will monitor the situation in the border areas between Armenia and Azerbaijan through regular and situational reports regarding military positions and ceasefire developments on the ground. This will make it possible for the EU to provide more objective support to the work of the border commissions of both sides.
  • The Area of ​​Responsibility (AoR) is the Armenian side of the internationally recognized border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
  • The team consists of a maximum of 40 EU civilian observer-experts who will be deployed for a period of two months.
  • There will be no similar mission on the Azerbaijani side of the border.
