Armenian Opposition MPs End Parliament Boycott
Armenian opposition MPs returned to the parliament today after more than six months of boycotting the legislature to voice their opposition to what they claim are serious concessions made by the Pashinyan government in normalization talks with Azerbaijan.
The opposition With Honor and Hayastan factions organized a series of street protests during the past six months in a bid to force Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan to resign. Those protests failed to attract critical numbers sufficient to overthrow the government.
Hayastan faction MP Aghvan Vardanyan took a defiant tone at the beginning of today’s session, warning the government majority that the opposition plans to actively oppose any bill it deems harming Armenian national interests.
"We are here, and you have to accept this fact. This is the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, and the National Assembly of the citizens who sent us here is not your property," said Vardanyan.
Vardanyan said the opposition’s street protest movement has been suspended, allowing the MPs to move the struggle to the parliament.
