European Court Says Armenia Violated Detainee's Right to Life

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), in a decision released on January 24, says Armenia was responsible for the 2010 death of detainee Slavik Voskanyan and has obligated the Armenian government to pay EUR 20,000 to his wife.

Slavik Voskanyan, was arrested on suspicion of murder and armed assault in October 2010 and was placed in pre‑trial detention in the Vanadzor Detention Facility.

The ECHR claims Armenian authorities failed to properly, and in a timely fashion, medically treat Voskanyan for a leg infection he caught while in detention.

The ECHR says Armenia violated Voskanyan’s right to life as stated in Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
