
Armenian Vakif Village Escapes Major Earthquake Damage
The Istanbul-based Agos news site reports that the Hatay village of Vakif, twenty-five kilometers from Antakya, escaped major damage in this week’s earthquake.
The earthquake heavily damaged Antakya, a city of more than 200,000, that has a small Armenian community.
Agos reports that three Armenians in Malatya were killed when the earthquake struck on February 6.
The Armenian Apostolic St. Giragos Church in Diyarbakır was not damaged. The church opened its doors to the public left homeless.
Agos reports that Armenian singer Zilan Tigris and her husband remain under the rubble in Diyarbakır.
Two Armenians in the city were killed in the quake.
