Blast Investigation: Surmalu Market Retailer Rearrested for Violating Safety Regulations
Police today rearrested a retail shop owner at Yerevan’s Surmalu Market, where an explosion last August killed sixteen and injured scores more, for violating fire safety regulations.
The unnamed shop owner is charged with storing flammable material at the market, despite signing an agreement with market management to remove the material.
The shop owner was arrested twelve days after the August 14 explosion but was released the same day when his lawyer filed a request to release him on his own recognizance.
On February 22, Yerevan police arrested Surmalu Market Director Irina Madatova․ The next day, a Yerevan court decided to detain her for two months for violating fire safety regulations.
