Pashinyan, CSTO Head Discuss Armenia-Azerbaijan Border Situation

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Imangali Tasmagambetov met in Yerevan today and discussed regional developments and security challenges.

The two, according to Pahinyan’s office discussed the situation along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

Tasmagambetov’s visit follows Yerevan’s recent criticism of the Russian-backed military alliance for failing to respond to Azerbaijani military incursions into sovereign Armenian territory.

In January, the Armenian government backed out of hosting CSTO military exercises given the ongoing closure of the Lachin Corridor.

Last November, the Armenian government rejected a CSTO offer to dispatch monitors along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, citing the reluctance of some CSTO member states to condemn Azerbaijani aggression against Armenia.

Tasmagambetov is reported to have met with Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan before visiting the Armenian resort town of Jermuk that was shelled by the Azerbaijani military during last September’s border clashes.
