Armenian MP: Meghri Customs Post is Filthy, Lacks Working Toilet

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan confirmed claims made by opposition Hayastan (Armenia) MP Gegham Nazaryan that the Armenian customs post along the border with Iran near the town of Meghri is poorly managed and filthy.

Nazaryan, during a Q&A parliamentary session today, said Armenians living in Iran crossing the border into Armenia had complained about the customs post, claiming it had no working toilet and takes hours to file through.

“The customs house is completely entrenched in filth, there is no normal toilet, and according to Iranian-Armenians, not even dogs use the existing toilets,” Nazaryan said.

According to the deputy, there are rabid dogs in the area. There is no sign for people who do not know Armenian informing them about what they must do to cross the border. There are no carts, forcing people to carry cargo on their backs. There’s no trash can or water in the area.

Pashinyan responded that some of the problems have been recorded.

"That’s the reason why we decided to build a new checkpoint in Meghri with the support of the European Union. If I am not mistaken, we are implementing a $28 million investment program to fundamentally solve this problem," said Pashinyan.
