CSTO Confirms Readiness to Assist Armenia

The Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has confirmed its readiness to send a monitoring mission to Armenia.

CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov, according to TASS,  said the mission, if accepted by Armenia, would train the country’s border guards and provide update technical resources.

Tasmagambetov noted that tensions in the South Caucasus, caused by many years of contradictions between Armenia and Azerbaijan persist.

"Of course, we welcome the efforts of the conflicting parties aimed at concluding a comprehensive peace agreement," Tasmagambetov said.

On November 23, 2022, during the CSTO collective security council summit in Yerevan, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan announced that Armenia would not sign the CSTO declaration and the aid project to Armenia.

The reason, according to Pashinyan, was that CSTO did not express a clear position on the Azerbaijani occupation of the sovereign territory of Armenia and did not condemn these actions. Moreover, Yerevan accused the CSTO of inaction for violating the territorial integrity of the member country and attacking the CSTO borders.
