Moldova Meeting: European Leaders Say Rights of Karabakh Armenians Must be Defined

Armenia and Azerbaijan reaffirmed their recognition of each other’s territorial integrity at yesterday’s meeting in Moldova, this according to a statement released by the Élysée Palace, the official residence of the President of the French Republic.

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, with EU Council President Charles Michel, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, met on June 1 on the sidelines of the European Political Community Summit in Chișinău, Moldova to discuss steps to normalize relations between their countries.

The statement says the European leaders called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to release all war detainees as soon as possible and stressed the importance of defining rights and guarantees for the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Macron, according to the statement, insisted on the need not to give in to hostile rhetoric and to continue efforts aimed at restoring peace for the benefit of all residents of the region.
