Washington D.C. Talks: Armenian Foreign Minister Stresses Rights and Security of Artsakh Armenians

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, at today’s meeting with U.S. Presidential National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, again stressed the importance of properly addressing the issues of rights and security of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and that any delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan must be based on 1975 Soviet maps and the 1991 Alma-Ata Protocols signed by Armenia and Azerbaijan and other ex-Soviet republics.

Mirzoyan also noted that yesterday's shelling of Artsakh defensive positions, during which four Artsakh soldiers were killed, was an attempt by Baku to undermine the peace process.

A statement issued by the Armenian Foreign Ministry doesn’t provide any information regarding what Bayramov said during the meeting.

Bayramov, according to a statement released by his office, said that Armenia has yet to fulfill oits obligation to withdraw its troops from Azerbaijan. Here, Bayramov refers to Nagorno Karabakh. The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister is quoted as saying that despite the current difficulties and challenges, Azerbaijan is determined and intends to advance the agenda of normalization and peace.

The talks will continue through June 29.

Yesterday, Blinken Tweeted the U.S. “supports Armenia and Azerbaijan working together toward a durable and dignified agreement. Dialogue is key to lasting peace.”
