No Breakthrough at Pashinyan-Aliyev Talks in Brussels

No breakthrough was reported following today’s meeting in Brussels of Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, hosted by EU Council President Charles Michel.

Pashinyan’s office, in a statement, merely said the parties agreed to “intensify the work” towards the reopening of the Lachin Corridor, ensuring the rights and security of Karabakh Armenians, the issue of POWs, and delimitating the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

A statement on the Azerbaijani presidential website reports ideas were exchanged regarding the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the continuation of negotiations on the peace process, the delimitation of borders, the opening of transport communications, the withdrawal of Armenian military units from the territories of Azerbaijan and the disarmament of illegal military units.

Charles Michel’s, in a press briefing, described today’s meeting as “frank, honest and substantive.”

“We are going through one of the most comprehensive and vigorous stages of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Michel remarked.

Regarding Karabakh, Michel said the European Union encourages “direct dialogue between Baku and representatives of Armenians living in the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast.”

Michel said he intends to invite Pashinyan and Aliyev to another meeting in Brussels after the summer, as well as for the two to meet with the leaders of France and Germany in Granada on the margins of the next European Political Community Summit.
