New Artsakh President Prioritizes Keeping Country Armenian
At a special session of the Artsakh parliament, newly elected Artsakh President Samvel Shahramanyan chided the international community for not implementing the decisions of the International Criminal Court calling on Azerbaijan to reopen the Lachin Corridor.
Shahramanyan said geopolitical centers are only satisfied with issuing appeals that lead nowhere and naively believe that Stepanakert must negotiate with Baku for Artsakh’s reintegration in Azerbaijan.
The new president said the Artsakh government is ready to talk to Baku but that the status of Artsakh must be on the agenda and that any talks must be moderated by a third country.
He said an “atmosphere of mutual trust” must be created before any such talks take place and the priority must be the reopening of the Lachin Corridor.
Shahramanyan said the main long-term goal of his administration, with greater support of Armenia and the diaspora, is to maintain Artsakh’s Armenian identity and that all the resources of the state will be inventoried and employed in this effort.
