Erdoğan Denounces Karabakh Presidential Election

Turkey has condemned the September 9 Artsakh parliament’s election of Samvel Shahramanyan as the country’s new president.

“We condemn and consider this election, which is held in a period when Azerbaijan and Armenia strive to continue peace talks, as a move to undermine them,” Turkey’s foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that Ankara doesn’t recognize the election that violates Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We call on the U.N. and international community not to recognize this election,” the ministry writes.

The Israeli-based i24News reports that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan denounced the election and said he’d telephone Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan to discuss the matter.

“What has been done in Karabakh is not appropriate. We cannot accept this", i24News quotes Erdoğan as saying after the G20 summit ended in New Delhi.

Pashinyan’s office confirmed the Armenian prime minister and Erdoğan spoke by phone today and discussed regional issues. The office made no mention of the September 9 election.
