Iranian Foreign Minister: U.S.-Armenia Military Exercise Complicates Regional Situation

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Iran talked by telephone on September 13 and statements released by the two ministries differ on the details.

A statement released by Armenia’s foreign ministry makes no mention that the two discussed Armenia’s decision to host a joint military exercise with the United States this week.

“As a continuation of the telephone conversation between the Armenian Prime Minister and the President of the Republic of Iran held a few days ago, the foreign ministers of the two countries discussed issues related to stability and security in the South Caucasus,” reads the statement of the Armenian foreign ministry.

The state-run Iran Press news agency, however, reports that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan “that any presence of foreign forces in the region leads to a more complicated situation in the region.”

The statements released by both ministries report that Mirzoyan and Amir-Abdollahian expressed satisfaction with the expansion of relations between their two countries.
