Pashinyan: Militarily Assisting Artsakh Would Have Threatened Armenia's Independence
Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, in a televised speech today, said his government has been informed of the Russian-brokered ceasefire in Karabakh and accepts it as such.
Pashinyan said that Armenia refrained from militarily assisting Artsakh during yesterday’s Azerbaijani attack because such a move would have threatened Armenia’s independence and sovereignty.
He claimed that Azerbaijan, by attacking Karabakh, wanted to provoke Armenia into joining the fighting.
He said that Russia, by brokering a ceasefire, assumes full responsibility for protecting the Armenians of Karabakh.
The ceasefire, accepted by the Artsakh government, calls for the disbanding and disarming of the local defense army.
Pashinyan said Armenia has no troops in Artsakh even though the ceasefire calls for the immediate withdrawal of all Republic of Armenia military units from Karabakh.
