Hungarian Foreign Minister in Armenia; Announces Plan to Open Consulate

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó arrived in Armenia today for talks with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan.

Following their meeting, the two ministers held a joint press conference and announced their readiness to expand political and economic relations between their two countries.

Mirzoyan said he and Szijjártó discussed issues related to the expanding partnership between Armenia and the European Union and Armenia’s participation in various regional projects including the Black Sea electricity cable.

Mirzoyan thanked Hungary for participating in the European Union’s civil mission in Armenia and for its willingness to provide psychological support to children displaced from Artsakh.

Szijjártó said Hungary intends to open a consulate in Armenia. Hungary's ambassador to Armenia resides in Tbilisi.

Armenia suspended relations with Hungary in 2012 after Ramil Safarov, an Azerbaijani officer sentenced to life in prison by a Hungarian court for the 2004 ax killing of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest, was extradited to Azerbaijan and promptly pardoned by Ilham Aliyev.

An agreement to restore Armenian-Hungarian diplomatic relations was reached on December 1, 2022.
