Armenia's Economy Minister Resigns

Vahan Kerobyan has resigned as Armenia’s economy minister.

Kerobyan, who was appointed economy minister in November 2020, issued a statement citing “many disagreements” as the cause but doesn’t specify what they were.

Earlier this month, seven Armenian Ministry of Economy employees were arrested on “abuse of power” charges following a probe into a government tender process for services designed for the Public Investment Projects Bank.

Kerobyan publicly voiced his criticism over the arrests and denied the corruption charges.

Ani Ispiryan was sacked as deputy economy minister one day before her arrest. Ani Gevorgyan, wife of Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonian’s brother Karlen, was also detained.

Kerobyan writes that while he wanted to resign as minister several times in the past, he decided to continue working to best serve the country.
