Armenia Can Apply for EU Membership, Says European Commission Spokesperson
Russian newspaper Izvestia reports that Peter Stano, the European Commission’s lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, said that Armenia may apply to join the European Union.
The European Parliament, on March 13, adopted a special resolution that calls for strengthening relations between Armenia and the European Union (EU) and emphasizes the need to conclude an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace treaty.
“Countries have the right to strive for a better future for their people. They are free to decide how to ensure such a future. Regarding EU membership, each European country - its people and government - must decide whether they want to apply to join the EU,” Stano told the newspaper in response to a question about whether the doors of the European Union are open to Armenia.
The most important point of the resolution is that the EU legislative body addresses the possibility of Armenia's candidacy for membership in the European Union and calls on the European institutions to consider the possibility of granting Armenia the status of an EU candidate country.
The European Commission (EC) is part of the executive branch of the European Union.
