Biden Envoy in Yerevan; Urges Pashinyan to Conclude Peace Deal with Azerbaijan
U.S. Presidential Senior Assistant and Senior Director for Europe at the National Security Council Michael Carpenter arrived in Armenia today following his visit to Azerbaijan and met with Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan.
Carpenter, according to Pashinyan’s office, delivered a letter to the Armenian prime minister in which U.S. President Joe Biden calls on Armenia to finalize a peace deal with Azerbaijan by the year’s end.
“As you know, finalizing the remaining articles of the peace agreement will require persistence, ingenuity and compromise. But putting patriotism above politics, you have bravely and consistently chosen the path of peace, and I encourage you to finalize the agreement this year,” the letter reads.
Carpenter, while in Baku, delivered a letter from Biden calling on the Azerbaijani government to conclude a peace agreement with Yerevan this year.
Biden, in his letter to Pashinyan, reaffirms his support to facilitate a “lasting and dignified peace agreement that will finally end the centuries-old conflict” between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
U.S. Senior Advisor for Caucasus Negotiations Louis Bono accompanied Carpenter on his trip to Yerevan.
Earlier, Carpenter met with Armenian Security Council Secretary Armenian Grigoryan and discussed regional security matters and the ongoing Yerevan-Baku normalization talks.
