Armenia Ready to Turn the Page of Enmity, Says Foreign Minister
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan reiterated Armenia’s willingness to “turn the page of enmity” regarding neighboring Azerbaijan and to establish institutionalized peace in the region.
Mirzoyan, addressing the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva today, criticized Baku for continuing to question Armenia’s territorial integrity and for conducting “mock trials” against twenty-three Armenians in disregard of human rights standards for due process.
“The Republic of Armenia, remaining faithful to its agenda on establishment of peace and stability in our region, has made several constructive proposals to the Azerbaijani side, including within the context of the Peace Agreement, opening of transport infrastructure, mutual arms control and verification mechanism etc., having in mind the necessity to establish a strategic deal that will resolve all major issues,” Mirzoyan said.
The Armenian foreign minister said the UN’s fundamental human rights principles are as relevant as ever given the consequences of violent conflicts, forced displacement and gross violations of fundamental rights the world is witnessing today.
“The scale and severity of atrocity crimes and grave violations as well as our collective inability neither effectively prevent nor ensure accountability, put at risk the whole set of fundamental values upon which the United Nations and its human rights system were created, basic norms on which all and each one of us agreed without reservation,” Mirzoyan said.
