Garni Complex, 'Symphony of Stones', and Yerevan's 'Urartian Heriatge' Make UNESCO's Tentative List
Armenia wants UNESCO to add the Archaeological Complex of Garni, the nearby ‘Basalt Organ’ (Symphony of Stones), and Yerevan’s ‘Urartian Heritage’ to the organization’s World Heritage List.
Armenia has submitted applications for the sites to UNESCO and, according to Armenia’s Ministry of Culture, the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee now taking place in Paris has approved their applications for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
These latest applications are the sixth and seventh applications to be registered by Armenia on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The first four were registered in 1995. These are: the ancient site of Dvin, the temple and ancient site of Yereruyk, Noravank and the upper valley of the Amaghu River, Tatev Monastery, the Tatev Desert and the adjacent areas of the Vorotan River Valley, the fifth, in 2024, the dragon stones and cultural landscape of the Tirinkatar ancient site.
The UNESCO World Heritage List includes Armenia’s monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat, the Mother Cathedral of Echmiadzin, churches and the ancient site of Zvartnots, the Geghard Monastery, and the upper valley of the Azat River.
