Armenian Deputy FM Reassures Tehran Over “Trump Route”, U.S. Presence in Region
Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan, during an interview with Iran’s Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), said the August 8 Trump-brokered “peace agreement” between Yerevan and Baku envisages the reopening of Nakhchivan–Jolfa railway line, which will mean Iran’s access to Armenia and, ultimately, to the Black Sea.
Kostanyan travelled to Iran earlier this week to reassure Tehran that the reopening of transportation arteries in the region will take place within the framework of full respect for the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, jurisdiction, and reciprocity of the countries involved.
Kostanyan, in the interview, attempted to allay Tehran’s concerns that the so-called “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) that plans to connect Azerbaijan proper with its Nakhijevan exclave via Armenia’s Syunik Province will not endanger Iran’s national interests.
“Regarding Tehran’s concerns about this agreement and the role of the United States, I must say this has been one of the main topics of our discussions yesterday and today. I have come here with the message that Armenia has taken Iran’s considerations into account and that these sensitivities were factored into the preliminary negotiations about the connectivity project known as the Trump project,” Kostanyan told IRNA.
Kostanyan ruled out any U.S. security presence in the region, adding that a company will be registered in Armenia, with shares divided between Armenia and the United States, to oversee the implementation of “Trump Route”.
The Armenian official stressed that the upcoming visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Yerevan will further strengthen the political alignment of the two countries and will open new avenues for economic cooperation.
