Historic First: Armenia, Pakistan to Establish Diplomatic Relations
Armenia and Pakistan today signed a joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations after decades of political wrangling.
Pakistan historically spurned relations with Armenia and supported Azerbaijan during the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
It appears that Pakistan has tempered it position given that Azerbaijan has regained control of Karabakh.
Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan and Pakistani Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar signed the communiqué on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China.
According to Mirzoyan’s office: “The governments of the two countries strive to develop friendly relations in accordance with the UN Charter, including the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence.”
In 2015, Pakistan declared that recognizing Armenia's independence eas contingent on the withdrawal of Armenian forces from Karabakh. In 2016, Yerevan opposed Pakistan’s request to join the Moscow-backed CSTO military alliance.
