Pashinyan in China: Reiterates Establishment of Peace Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin (China) today reiterated that peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been established, describing the agreements signed in Washington D.D. on August 8 as a historic turning point that will have a much broader regional impact.
Pashinyan thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for inviting an Armenian delegation to the SCO summit for the first time.
“I am confident that the steps taken under the Chinese presidency will contribute to the discovery of new directions of cooperation within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, recording new achievements,” Pashinyan’s office quotes him as saying.
Pashinyan said Yerevan and Baku are discussing the opening of transportation links and that a proposed artery linking Azerbaijan proper with its Nakhchivan exclave via Armenian territory will provide mutual benefits for both countries.
He also noted that Armenia and Pakistan yesterday at the summit signed a joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Pashinyan, however, failed to mention that Armenia also signed a “strategic partnership” agreement with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) that recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of the PRC.
Pashinyan signed the partnership agreement yesterday after arriving in China to attend the 25th Heads of State Council meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which ends today.
Armenia is one of the fourteen dialog partners of the SCO, the world's largest regional organization in terms of geographic scope and population.
