Iraqi PM Attends Reopening of Armenian Church in Baghdad
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Sunday inaugurated the reopening of the historic Armenian Apostolic St. Grigor Church in central Baghdad after its restoration as part of efforts to rehabilitate historic landmarks in the Iraqi capital.
The church, built in 1957, reopened ahead of Christmas following completed renovations, according to a statement released by the prime minister’s office.
Al-Sudani, according to 964 media, toured the church’s halls and corridors to review what the statement described as a comprehensive restoration of “this important landmark.”
He said he valued being present at the religious site and announcing its reopening after the completion of restoration and rehabilitation works.
Al-Sudani said the reconstruction of the church reflects “diversity and coexistence in the new Iraq,” calling it “a step toward reviving Baghdad’s brilliance and preserving its heritage and cultural, civilizational and architectural legacy.”
This is the church’s first and most extensive renovation since its construction.
