Armenia's Parliament Speaker Files Slander Suit Against Former President Kocharyan
Armenia’s Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan has filed a lawsuit in court against former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan, demanding that he publicly apologize for insulting him and pay AMD one million (US$ 2,662) in compensation.
Simonyan claims that Kocharyan insulted him during a January 29, 2026 press conference when a reporter asked the former president to comment on an earlier assertion made by Simonyan that during Kocharyan’s tenure the country’s military was in a sad state – insufficiently supplied with food and water, and that officers routinely humiliated soldiers.
Surprised by the allegation, Kocharyan shot back that during his presidency the army was in such a good state that Azerbaijan did dare not atack.
"If Alen Simonyan is expected to assess the army's combat effectiveness, what have we come to? What does this person understand about the army? I doubt he even served normally. Because such sleazy people cannot serve normally," Kocharyan responded.
The AMD one million Simonyan demands is to pay for legal expenses.
