Court Grants Jailed Archbishop House Arrest for Medical Reasons

Armenia’s Criminal Appeals Court has decided to place Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan, now in jail after being found guilty of plotting against the Armenian government, under house arrest given the clergyman’s poor health.

Ajapahyan’s defense team had petitioned the court to do so.

The archbishop, still regarded as primate of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, has been detained since June 2025.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment last October.
