Armenian Defense Minister Urges Diplomatic Resolution of U.S. - Iran Nuclear Issue
Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan, during a meeting today in Tehran with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Larijani, called for a diplomatic resolution of the recent escalation of tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
The Pentagon is assembling the biggest force of American warships and aircraft in the Middle East in decades, featuring two aircraft carrier strike groups. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that he is considering military action against Iran if negotiations regarding its nuclear program fail.
During his State of the Union speech on Tuesday Trump said, “My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy. But one thing is certain, I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on social media Tuesday that Iran will restart negotiations with the U.S. in Geneva this week, aiming to reach a fair and equitable agreement as quickly as possible.
Papikyan and Larijani, according to Armenia’s Ministry of Defense, also discussed regional security and stability issues and prospects of Armenia-Iran bilateral cooperation in this regard.
