Armenia Marks 1988 Sumgait Massacre Anniversary
Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the following statement today to mark the 38th anniversary of the Sumgait massacres in Azerbaijan.
During these days of commemorating the victims of the Sumgait massacres organized by the forces of Soviet Azerbaijan in 1988, we pay tribute to the memory of hundreds of Armenians who were killed. Almost 500,000 people were forcibly displaced.
Remembrance is not just about reflecting on the past. It reaffirms our shared responsibility to protect human rights, reject hatred and hate speech in all its manifestations, while working unwaveringly for reconciliation and lasting peace.
