Court Sentences 6 Military Officers in Dink Trial
A Turkish court earlier today convicted six of eight suspects of “dereliction of duty” in preventing the January 2007 murder of Agos Editor Hrant Dink.
Those sentenced were Trabzon Gendarmerie Commander Col. Ali Öz and Gendarmerie Intelligence Unit Director Cpt. Metin Yıldız (six months apiece) and NCOs Okan Şimşek, Veysel Şahin, Hüseyin Yılmaz and Hacı Ömer Ünalır (four months),
Two other military personnel were acquitted by the court. Şimşek and Şahin had previously testified that they knew about the plot to kill Dink six months before the murder took place and recounted that they had informed Gendarmerie Intelligence Director Cpt. Yıldız, who, in turn, informed Col. Öz. The two officers testified that Öz did nothing upon receiving the information.
