Russia Limits Fish Imports From Armenia Amid Rising Diplomatic Tensions

Russia will suspend fish imports from all but two Armenian processing plants, its agricultural safety watchdog announced today, adding to a growing list of food and beverage restrictions as Yerevan deepens ties with the European Union.

Rosselkhoznadzor said the move followed a week of inspections at Armenian fish processing plants and trout farms. According to the agency, half of the companies refused inspection.

“Based on the findings, Armenia must suspend veterinary certification from June 2 for shipments of live fish and seafood products from all Armenian companies to Russian recipients,” Rosselkhoznadzor said.

Russia has recently restricted the sale or import of Armenian produce, flowers, mineral water, and alcoholic beverages over alleged health and safety violations.

Russia imports large volumes of fish from Armenia, mainly trout and other fresh fish, with annual trade historically valued at $40 million to $58 million. Armenia exports more than 3,500 tons of trout to Russia each year, and the Russian market accounts for about 99% of Armenia’s fish exports.
