Prosperous Armenia Accuses Electoral Commision of Stealing Its Votes
Prosperous Armenia party leader Gagik Tsarukyan today accused Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of fraudulently stealing votes cast in its favor and thus preventing from winning seats in the country’s next parliament.
Tsarukyan claims the CEC held a secret session that annulled the election results in two precincts without scheduling a rerun, as required by the country’s Electoral Code.
Initial election results showed the Prosperous Armenia party of garnering four percent of the votes in the June 7 parliamentary election, the threshold for entering the legislature.
Later, the CEC revised the party’s vote count to 3.996%. Final election results will be announced on June 14.
“It is obvious that the elections were canceled precisely in those precincts where the Prosperous Armenia received a lot of votes. At the same time, the results of those precincts where the nullification of the party’s votes could not have affected the outcome of the elections were not canceled,” Tsarukyan writes in a statement released today.
Tsarukyan also accused the ruling authorities of conducting an “immoral and illegal” campaign against Prosperous Armenia.
“Many of our supporters and activists were subjected to criminal prosecutions, and there were arrests on trumped-up charges. The ruling power waged a vulgar campaign against us, full of insults and slander,” Tsarukyan writes.
Tsarukyan promises that Prosperous Armenia will take all legal means, in conjunction with other opposition forces, to ensure that all votes cast in its favor are counted.
“Our legal team is working on all possible appeals and court processes. We are launching political consultations with political forces to develop a joint agenda and steps.”
