Armenian Justice Minister Upholds June 7 Election Results

Armenia’s Constitutional Court will soon end its review of the case submitted by seven political forces questioning the results of the country’s June 7 parliamentary election.

The plaintiffs, after a six-day examination, are making their closing statements today. The court will publish its final decision on July 4.

Aram Vardevanyan, a representative of the Strong Armenia alliance noted in his speech that systematic, massive, and periodic electoral violations occurred during the election.

Armenian Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan, in her closing remarks, said that the plaintiffs had not presented specific evidence  to establish whether the alleged violations took place or whether they were of such a scale that they could have affected the outcome of the elections.

“The applicant was obliged to prove not only the fact of the alleged violations, but also their impact on the election results. The applicants failed to do this,” Srbuhi Galyan noted, adding that the election results cannot be declared invalid based on assumptions.

Referring to the abuse of administrative resources, Galyan noted that the references relate to the normal activities of the government. She claimed that not one solitary case was presented to the Constitutional Court to substantiate the illegal use of administrative resources and its impact on the free expression of the voter's will.

Galyan did not comment much on the allegations about hate speech, noting that they are illogical. And the Corruption Prevention Commission has made the issues a subject of discussion. She said that any examples of strong language were never directed at citizens, while representatives of the Strong Armenia and Armenia blocs, as well as other parties among the forces that appealed to the Constitutional Court, made attempts to mislead voters on the topic of the return of 300,000 Azerbaijanis, and failed.

Galyan concluded by saying that there are no grounds for recognizing the election results as invalid.
