Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan left for the Kyrgyz Republic today to attend a session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council.

The council is a governing body of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) composed of the heads of government of its member states - Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia.

The council implements and monitors decisions made by the higher Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and directs the work of the Eurasian Economic Commission.  

A deep geopolitical and trade rift has emerged between Armenia and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), exacerbated by Yerevan’s strategic pivot toward the European Union and subsequent trade blockades by Moscow.

While EAEU members (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia) asserted that Armenia cannot simultaneously pursue EU integration and remain a compliant member of the Eurasian bloc, they formally pressured Yerevan to hold an immediate national referendum on its alignment. Armenia pushed back, stating that holding a referendum is illogical until Yerevan formally applies for EU candidacy.
