Armenia’s Investigative Committee Sets 2020 War Death Toll at 3,833

Armenia’s Investigative Committee (IC) today announced that 3,833 Armenians died in the 2020 Artsakh War - 3,755 soldiers and 78 civilians.

The IC says the whereabouts of 191 people - 172 servicemen, and 19 civilians are unknown.

The official number of Armenian casualties from the 2020 war has steadily risen and fluctuated over the years as forensic DNA identification concluded, missing person cases were resolved, and political controversies unfolded.

Because hundreds of bodies were severely damaged or left in territories ceded to Azerbaijan, confirming deaths took years.

In the months directly following the November 2020 ceasefire, the official Armenian death toll was initially reported around 2,200 to 2,400 killed, with hundreds of soldiers still categorized as missing.

By October 2021, extensive DNA sequencing of remains pushed the official tally up to 3,712 servicemen and 76 civilians killed, while 243 people remained missing.

In 2022, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan released adjusted data bringing the count to 3,812 casualties.

Confusion on the number of casualties was highlighted when Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan, just days ago, stated that Armenia suffered 4,800 casualties. His office was forced to issue a correction, clarifying that the president had "misspoken" and confirming that the official IC record stands at 3,755 military deaths.
