UN Chief Applauds Armenian Diplomacy at COP17 as Pashinyan Signals "Final Stage" for Azerbaijan Peace Deal

YEREVAN — Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan hosted UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the Government headquarters today, following Guterres's arrival in Armenia to participate in the Leaders' Summit of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Pashinyan welcomed Guterres, noting he is only the second UN Secretary-General to visit the country, and praised the central role of the UN and multilateralism in navigating an increasingly complex global environment. Turning to regional dynamics, Pashinyan emphasized that despite navigating very difficult events, Armenia has turned the situation around. He stated that the nation's primary objective is now reaching the final stage of signing and ratifying a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Secretary-General Guterres congratulated Armenia on hosting COP17—the largest event ever organized in the republic—praising the country's "extraordinary diplomatic skill" in bridging diverse international viewpoints during the biodiversity negotiations. Guterres also emphasized the critical importance of establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, highlighting Pashinyan's personal contributions to the peace process.

According to the government's press service, the two leaders also reviewed broader regional processes during their meeting, specifically underscoring the implementation status and importance of the TRIPP project for unblocking regional transport links and fostering long-term cooperation.
