The Yerevan civic group “We are the owners of this city” have lashed out at the ineffectiveness and unprofessional behaviour of the capital’s municipality regarding the continuing construction violations taking place under its very nose.

The group says that the recent collapse of an illegal building under construction at 20 Khandjyan Street is the latest proof that the municipality is not interested and capable of overseeing construction projects in the Armenian capital.

In a press release, “We are the owners of this city” state that it sent a twenty page list of proposals to Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan regarding construction violations in the city’s parks and green spaces on October 11.

On November 6 the group says it received a derisory response from the mayor office, saying that the matter would have to be reviewed by the municipality’s committee on the ecology.

The group says the response was absurd since the ecological committee is merely an advisory body with no decision-making power.

The civic group also says that the matter was raised yesterday in the ecological committee and was met with a round of laughter from its members. They, in turn, sent the proposal package back to the municipality.
